Hey y’all!!! Hope you’re doing well! We’ve been dabbling in exciting things, but that does mean less painting time (like I had a lot before.. lol). Hopefully we’ll have some cool announcements soon. They’re not painting related, but its me related. 🙂
Anyways, I’ve been continuing working on my comic style, and I think it’s really coming along nicely! I got my new reference book in and I’ve been marking pages in it, and learning a lot. I also went ahead and backed (?) the Epic Duck Studios Patreon so I could watch all his videos. He has some awesome ones about just painting the base, here’s my attempts at that! I’m actually pretty excited about them! I don’t know if I mentioned it, but I did find the Higgin’s black magic at my local hobby store, so it must be pretty easily available.
I’m going to try and post these in order so you can see the progression, but I’m using this one tentacle-y thing as my practice and proof-of-concept for comic style at a bigger scale. It’s definitely going to take a while to finish up once I iron out all the issues, but I’m loving the way it looks so far!
This is when I realized I was using the wrong lightest green… Outlining all the yellow forever New yellowier green 🙂 Working out lines…
Started hashmarks on yellow, decided highest green highlight wasn’t wide enough… Widened highlight Much better
So that’s where I am now. I’m super enjoying it. It is definitely intense though…. after doing about 2 hours of line work, this is what my thumb looked like, and it stayed that way for about an hour! lol

I’ve also been doing the duos with my buddy Jeff (maxstyles), and this month we decided to challenge each other to do a color we hate… So we both chose yellow. I decided to do mine white and yellow cause, why not?! WIP still, but I think it’s working it’s way there. I need to get a move on, cause we have to turn in next week!
I think that’s it for now.. I’m still ironing out my Reapercon entries, but I know I’m gonna have a few. Just gotta see which tablewar case I need to transport them… Lol.
Let me know what y’all think!

I’m glad you’re enjoying it! I’ve been working on some more I plan to post either tonight or in the morning, depending on how the lining treats me. Lol.
All those lines have definitely improved my brush control like crazy in a very short period of time! 🤣🤣

For lining small details, like those yellow scales(?), look at using a scale modeling trick – enamel/oil panel liner. You will have to gloss coat first, then line, then get rid of the glass with a standard dull coat. The nice thing about this method is that the thinner based liner takes much longer to dry, so mistakes can be corrected with a wipe of thiner, and the glass coat protects you acrylic paint job, while providing as wicking action for the tine wash to get into every nook and cranny. Big time saver!

That’s a great idea! I may have to see if I can find that and try that!

I really like this cartoon style – very inspiring. I know my own freehand needs a lot of work, and those bases (as well as the tentacle) look great!

Thanks so much! I can tell I will definitely level up brush control a few times on this project!! Lol
I definitely recommend checking out Mike Cousins’ videos on youtube. I can’t draw to save my life, and these turned out okay! I credit his fantastic teaching. Lol
