Hey!!!

Whew! This class has me over a barrel a little bit! I start clinicals next month, so there is light at the end of the tunnel!!!!

So, I got some inspiration the other day. I have been wanting to paint up my Legion of Justice and Caeke minis for a while now…. ****(and I’m on the lookout for an Echidnox. Let me know if you have one you’d be willing to part with!!!! I have multiples of all 3 of the others, we can trade or I will give you MONIES!) **** but I didn’t know what I wanted to do with them. I think I always see Platypod with a blue cloak and yellow stars. And that’s great! But I wanted to do something different. I have several ideas, all revolving around whether or not I find an Echidnox (give me yours).

Then I saw this tattoo.

And I thought, what if the stars were embroidered on?!

Well, then I had to go figure out how to recreate that effect. I couldn’t find a how-to, which excited me. I like to find kind of ‘new’ things and use them in my competition pieces. Or use a difficult technique to grab attention (like that accursed resin!). First pass just didn’t quite work for me. It just wasn’t quite right. I talked to the Great Bearded One, and he mentioned that it probably didn’t look right because that’s not how you would embroider a star. Eureka! So I went and looked up how to embroider a star. It’s called a satin stitch, if you didn’t know. 🙂 Then I tried it again.

And I loved it!!! It works! Proof of concept proven! I haven’t painted any of his tiny little stars yet, but here is my Platypod, in his WIP glory!

I painted the cloak first, then underpainted the stars. I wanted them to have a dark border to help them pop, and to add dimension. They’re basecoated with spruce green (cause it’s one of my favorites!!!), and we’ll see where we go from there!!

I’d love to hear about what you’re planning on bringing to Reapercon, or if you have a better way to paint an embroidered effect. OR IF YOU HAVE AN ECHIDNOX OR KNOW SOMEONE WHO DOES!!!!
